Letter from Prevention of Blindness Research Funds dated 1978, advising of the artist's painting being placed into a competition's winners exhibition

My first exhibition! It was 1978 and I was 14 years old.

My mum found this letter amongst a pile of papers, whilst clearing out some drawers. It had been given to my parents from the head teacher at my high school. I had entered the nationwide competition along with all the other pupils in my art class. I can still recall the awkward self-consciousness that enveloped me when the announcement was made in assembly!

I also remember being devastatingly disappointed when told by my parents that we couldn’t go and see the exhibition, but then Starsky and Hutch came on the television, and I promptly forgot about it. Fickle.
